Shear bolts provide a permanent security fixing, ideal for use in prisons, banks, automotive, MOD and aerospace etc.Ī wide range of shear bolt types and sizes (including dome head, countersunk head and cap head shear bolts) are available from stock in A2 stainless steel and we can also manufacture to customer requirements and drawings in any material, diameter or length. Once the force applied to tighten the shear bolt reaches the shear-off torque, the hexagon section and collar snaps off, leaving only the shear bolt head with no drive or means of removal. The hexagon shaped section is the ‘drive’ part of the shear bolt and can be installed using a standard spanner or socket tool. The amount of torque necessary to loosen the bolt is the torque applied to the bolt in the beginning. At the exact position that the bolt breaks loose, note the reading and mark it off. Loosening test also called breakaway test operates similar as the movement check except an extra force is employed to the fastened bolt in the loosening direction. The hexagonal shaped section on top of the bolt snaps off when fully tightened, leaving a tamper-proof dome, countersunk or cap head. Shear bolts (or snap-off bolts) are a premium 1-way permanent security solution, ideal where maintenance is not required. A wide range is available from stock with specials made to order. Shear bolts are a type of anti-theft bolt, used in many industries where robust permanent security fixings are required.
